Kurdistan to celebrate in Berlin 109th
anniversary of first Kurdish Newspaper

Erbil, Kurdistan region (Iraq), -- Iraqi
Kurdistan government will organize a festival in
Berlin to celebrate the 109th anniversary of the
first Kurdish newspaper titled 'Kurdistan', an
official said.
The festival will start on April 21 and lasts three
days, Hameed Abu Bakr, the director of Badrakhan
Institution for Publishing, said on Friday.
A committee was formed of celebrities to arrange for
the festival and it has already asked Kurdistan
Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani to allocate a
budget for the event.
Some 50 journalistic, cultural and non-governmental
institutions will be invited to attend the festival.
The first Kurdish newspaper was issued in Cairo,
Egypt, on April 22, 1898. A big festival is held
annually to mark the occasion.
The first Kurdish newspaper titled Kurdistan,
was published in Cairo in 1898, 31 issues in total.
Since then hundreds of different Kurdish newspapers,
magazines and journals have been published in
Ottoman Empire, Iraq, Armenia, Syria, Lebanon and
Iran and in recent years in Turkey, Germany, Sweden
and France.
