Kurdistan Region (Iraq), -- Autonomous Kurdistan
Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani has claimed
that Kirkuk belongs to Kurdistan.
Barzani also said that Kurds have the right to
establish an independent state.
Barzani has given an interview to Dar-ul Hayat
Newspaper in London and said: "Kirkuk belongs to
Kurdistan and it will stay a Kurdish state."
Barzani claimed their interest on Kirkuk is not
because of the oil reserves it contains but because
its national structure is being interfered.
"Just like other nations living on this world, Kurds
also have the right to establish a state," said
Barzani.

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister
Nechirvan Barzani |
The former Iraqi president forced about 250,000
Kurdish residents to give up their homes to Arabs in
the 1970s, to "Arabize" the city and the region's
oil industry.
Kirkuk city lies just south border of the Kurdistan
autonomous region and it is not under the full
control of Kurdistan Regional Government
administration.
A referendum is to be held in late 2007 to decide
whether the oil-rich Kurdish province should be
annexed to the safe semiautonomous Kurdistan region
in Iraq's north.
