BAGHDAD, January
12, -- The US Army said on Friday that American
troops had burst into and searched a building
housing the Iranian consulate in the Kurdistani
(northern Iraqi) city of Erbil to "prevent hostile
intervention in internal Iraqi affairs."
The army in a statement said the US troops had
carried out the "routine operation" as part of
continuous action throughout Iraq against elements
suspected of involvement in killing Iraqis and
coalition troops." The statement said one out of six
"detainees" who were caught during the operation was
set free, and that the five others were still
subjected to interrogation.
The coalition forces will continue action, in
coordination with the Iraqi government, and prevent
"hostile action in the interior Iraqi affairs," it
said.
The US Army, yesterday, said the American forces
arrested six persons, when they burst into the
building of the Iranian consulate in Erbil, the
capital of northern Iraqi Kurdistan region.
One of six people detained by US forces in Iranian
consulate, has been freed, the US military said
Friday.
Washington has accused Iran and other neighboring
states of meddling in the internal affairs of Iraq.
Tehran has protested the action against the mission
in Erbil as provocative.
