Erbil,
Kurdistan-Iraq, September 25 ,-- Iraqi Kurdish
parliamentarians from Islamic factions are opposing
changes before the regional parliament concerning
polygamy, which would mean that anyone who takes a
second wife risks two years in jail and a fine of
around three million Iraqi dinars.
MP Zana Rustay of the Islamic Group argued that this
amendment is "contrary to Islamic sharia law and to
the constitution. For this reason we Islamist
deputies reject it completely."
However the president of the Union of Muslim Ulema
of Kurdistan, Muhammad Kanzi, defended the decree,
explaining that "the law banning polygamy will not
post any problems in Kurdistan."
He stressed that "the authorities have the right to
approve laws that are in the public interest."
The parliamentary committee for the defence of
women's rights in Kurdistan had appealed to the
regional parliament to modify family law asking them
particularly to restrict the practice of polygamy.
