Picasso painting confiscated in Erbil is a fake
Erbil , Kurdistan
Forensic examinations conducted on a painting proved
that it is in fact a replica.
This has refuted claims made by the Directorate of
Drug Eradication last week, that the painting could
be an authentic Picasso piece.
"Other items seized last week, in the same raid,
included a number of leather sheets with Assyrian
writing, which were signed by bishops almost 200
years ago," said the Directorate of Antiques.
New plan to handle shortage of electricity
supplies
An informed source from the Directorate of
Electricity in Sulaimaniyah announced last week that
a new program is in place to deal with the shortage
of electricity in the area.
Generators are to be set up across the city to
increase supply to the district, as the previous
ampere ratio program proved to be unsuccessful in
solving the crisis. The proposed program is
currently being considered by Bakir Ahmed, the
general director of electricity distribution in
Sulaimaniyah.
The official from the Directorate of Electricity in
Sulaimaniyah added that there were ongoing debates
as to whether the generators should be owned
privately or by the government, but that a decision
will be finalized next week.
Britain deports 32 Kurdish asylum seekers to
Kurdistan Region
The British Foreign Ministry last week returned 32
Kurdish asylum seekers to Erbil, against their will.
A specially arranged flight from Britain landed at
Erbil International Airport, carrying the deportees.
This follows an attempt made by the British Foreign
Ministry last year to forcefully return 70 Kurdish
asylum seekers to Kurdistan, but which was stopped
at the last minute by lawyers.
An informed source said that the deportees were held
in a British prison for almost two weeks before they
were flown back to Kurdistan. The prisoners
allegedly broke window panes in the prison to hurt
themselves, in protest against the decision by the
British Ministry to return them to Kurdistan.
Unlike the former British Foreign Minister, John
Reid is said to be very determined to deport illegal
immigrants, and as such more deportations of Kurdish
asylum seekers are expected in the near future.
The two major political parties in Kurdistan have
not yet made any official comment on these events.
