Baghdad will not allow KRG to buy electricity
from Iran
Kurdistan, Iraq ( KRG - Kurdistan Regional
Government)
A plan by the Directorate of Electricity in
Kurdistan to buy electricity supplies from Iran is
currently on hold, as they have not yet had approval
on this from the Iraqi central government.
"We have an agreement with the Iranian government to
buy electricity from their country in order to
increase supplies in the Kurdistan region. However,
we are not able to go any further with this project
until the Iraqi government gives us authorization to
do so. At present, the Iraqi central government is
planning to buy the supply from Iran itself and
supply it to the country via Basra city.
A further challenge is presented to the project by
the fact that there is a difference in voltage
between supplies in Iran and Kurdistan. This is
another problem that will need to be overcome before
the plan can continue," said Diar Tahir Baban, the
Director of Electricity Distribution in the
Kurdistan region.
"The project of buying electricity from Iran is to
cost $25-30 million, and the supply will be brought
into the region through the border points of Haji
Omaran and Darbandi Khan. Once approved by the Iraqi
central government, the project should take 12-25
months to complete," the director added.
KRG Universities open Doors for students from
other parts of Kurdistan
University Kurdistan
The KRG Ministry of Higher Education has made the
decision to allow students from other parts of the
Kurdistan region to apply to study in Iraqi Kurdish
universities.
Students from the Iranian, Turkish and Syrian areas
of Kurdistan, who have already graduated from high
school, are now eligible to enroll for courses in
the universities of the Kurdistan region.
The Ministry of Higher Education is to launch
special Kurdish and English language courses for
those students that require them, to facilitate
their enrolment in the local universities.
A large number of students from the other parts of
Kurdistan are already applying for the universities
of the Iraqi Kurdistan region, and it hoped that
many more will seize this opportunity to further
their education.
