Salahaddin,
Kurdistan-Iraq, September 17, -- Gen. Joseph
Ralston, a U.S. special envoy appointed to
coordinate the fight against the PKK, met with
Massoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Regional
Government in (northern Iraq) and Kurdistan
Democratic Party (KDP) leader.
The news posted on the website of the KDP reported
that Ralston travelled to Kurdistan (northern Iraq)
after his meetings in Ankara.
Ralston reportedly met with Barzani in Salahaddin
city in Kurdistan and informed him about his
mission. The meeting was not open to the public.
Barzani said to Ralston that the Kurdish problem
could only be solved with peaceful methods and they
were ready to do whatever was expected of them to
solve the problem. |

Barzani's decision to
lower the Iraqi flag had
little meaning here since almost the only flag seen
in the Kurdistan region - even before the ban - was
the green, white, and red-striped banner of
Kurdistan with a yellow sunburst in the middle.
On a political level, the move raised fears that
Kurdish leaders would push for the region to secede
from the rest of Iraq, fears that Barzani
downplayed.
