Sulaimaniyah,
Kurdistan-Iraq, 28 August 2006 ,-- The Governor of
Kurdistani (the northern Iraqi) largely Kurdish city
of Sulaimaniyah has reportedly called Faik Gulpi,
the head of the Kurdistan Democratic Solution Party
(PÇDK), to his offices with a request that Gulpi
close down his party's offices in the city.
Mention of this request was published in the Kurdish
Roj Welat newspaper as proof of the ties between the
PKK and the Kurdistan Democratic Solution Party.
While Gulpi was apparently told his party had 10
days in which to cease his party's activities, he
also reportedly asserted that he would pursue his
rights on the matter. He also reportedly expressed
anger at what he said was the allowing of Turkmeni
political parties to operate in Kurdistan (northern
Iraq) without repercussion.
Faik Gulphi, president of the PÇDK, confirmed the
closing down the Sulaimaniyah's office and stressed
that office had closed down by the Turkish
governments efforts. Underlining the closing down
the Erbil's office on early July, "Reason of the
closing down decision is the lack of localizing a
office. However, Turkmen parties are in the same
positions like us, thre is no any intervention for
them"
Turkey has been pressuring the Iraqi government to
close down all offices linked to the PKK
organization. The Iraqi authorities had already
closed down the PKK contact offices in Baghdad
called Ocalan Strategic Studies, (only 500 meters
away from the Turkish Embassy)
Iraqi police announced that the offices were closed
down for their ties with the PKK organization.
More than 37,000 people have been killed since 1984
when the PKK, blacklisted by Turkey, the United
States and the European Union, took up arms for
self-rule in the country's mainly Kurdish southeast
of Turkey.
The use of the term "Kurdistan" is vigorously
rejected due to its alleged political implications
by the Republic of Turkey, which does not recognize
the existence of a "Turkish Kurdistan". These
political implications are claimed to involve
primarily the Democratic Society Party (DTP) in
Turkey's current political scene.
Others estimate as many as 40 million Kurds live in
Big Kurdistan (Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Iran, Armenia),
which covers an area as big as France.
About half of all Kurds which estimate to 20 million
live in Turkey
Officially the Kurdish flag flown in Iraqi Kurdistan
but unofficially flown by Kurds in Armenia. The flag
is banned in Iran, Syria, and Turkey where flying it
is a criminal offence
