Two rebel Kurds killed in fighting in
central Turkey

ANKARA, August
20, 2006 ,-- Two Kurdish militants belonging to the
outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) have been
killed in fighting with security forces in the
central Turkish province of Sivas, the Anatolia news
agency said on Sunday.
The clashes occured in a rural area close to the
village of Imranli where security forces launched an
operation to flush out rebels, Anatolia reported,
adding that the sweep, backed by air support, was
still ongoing.
The province of Sivas sits on the edge of
Kurdish-dominated areas.
PKK separatists has been fighting for an independent
Kurdish homeland in southeastern Turkey since 1984.
More than 37,000 people have been killed in the
conflict.
Violence has flared this year with at least 98 PKK
militants and 66 members of the security forces
killed so far, according to an AFP count.
The PKK has been listed as a terrorist organisation
by the European Union, Turkey and the United States.
The PKK's separatist campaign in southeastern Turkey
has claimed nearly 37,000 lives since 1984 when the
PKK launched its fight for independence or autonomy
for the mainly Kurdish-populated southeast of
Turkey.
