ISTANBUL, August
15 (AFP) , -- An armed Kurdish group said
Tuesday it had planted a bomb that exploded the day
before in a tourist area of Istanbul, injuring three
poeople, a pro-Kurdish news agency reported.
"We assume responsibility for this act ... the
consequences of which could have been far more
bloody," said a statement from the Kurdistan Freedom
Falcons (TAK), quoted by the Firat agency, based
outside Turkey.
A device, aimed at causing noise rather than harm,
exploded Monday under a bench in the Sultanhamet
district, near the Agia Sofia mosque and the Topkapi
palace.
The blast occurred the day before the anniversary of
the start of an armed rebellion, in 1984, by the
separatist PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party),
considered a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the
United States and the European Union.
The Turkish authorities believe the TAK is linked to
the PKK. It has acknowledged responsibility for
similar attacks in Istanbul and other cities.
More than 32,000 people,
have been killed since the early 1980s when the PKK
launched its fight for independence or autonomy for
the mainly Kurdish-populated southeast of Turkey.
