Turkish, Iranian canon target Iraqi Kurdistan region 14.8.2006

Baghdad, August 13, - Turkish and Iranian canon fire is believed to have hit (Kurdistan) northern Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region near the borders with Turkey and Iran Sunday morning, a source linked to region's border guards said.

The source told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that Iranian canon fire hit the border towns of Khaneera, Lolan, and Nazdari Dakh in Erbil province, adding that the areas near the Iranian border were hit for several hours.

The source said that at the same time Turkish canon were pounding the Qabr Zaheer, Khuwakork and Jorjan areas near the Turkey-Erbil border.

The extent of the material damage inflicted on Erbil was not immediately known.

The reason behind the unrest in Erbil has been attributed to the presence of elements of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is outlawed in Turkey, along with the members of the Kurdish al-Hayat Party which is opposed to Iran.

Both Turkey and Iran are said to be attempting to rid Erbil of these two parties' mountain bases and outposts.

Both Turkey and Iran have previously attacked areas in the region in the recent past, and Turkey has announced its willingness to send its forces into the northern Iraqi region to strike PKK outposts.

On Saturday, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, speaking with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, informed the Turkish Government of his willingness to shut down all PKK bases in Iraq.

More than 32,000 people, have been killed since the early 1980s when the PKK launched its fight for independence or autonomy for the mainly Kurdish-populated southeast of Turkey.

Al-Maliki reiterated his government's readiness to shut down all PKK bases throughout Iraq on Sunday.
