ANKARA, August 7,
-- Voicing strong assurances concerning concrete
action against the presence of members of the
outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in his
country, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has
announced that several offices in Iraq assumed to be
linked to the PKK have been shut down.
Talabani's remarks came on Saturday, only a day
after his meeting with Turkey's ambassador to Iraq,
Unal Cevikoz.
Speaking at a press conference Talabani, also head
of one of the two mainstream Kurdish parties in Iraq
-- the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) --
underlined that he was personally dealing with the
PKK issue.
"I called the Turkish envoy and gave assurances that
the Iraqi government has been serious about stopping
organizations from using Iraqi territory for
launching attacks against neighboring countries.
Iraq will do every thing to stop the PKK using Iraqi
territory against Turkey,"
Talabani was quoted as saying, by CNN-Turk. |

The Iraqi president also noted that he expected
talks as part of a trilateral mechanism of
cooperation -- involving Turkey, the United States
and Iraq -- to take place in the near future.
Ankara, however, has been pressing the United States
and Iraq to crack down on the PKK bases in Kurdistan
(northern Iraq) and has recently raised the option
of sending its own troops into Kurdistan-Iraq if the
U.S. and Iraqi inaction against the PKK persists.
The PKK is designated as a terrorist organization by
Ankara, the United States and the European Union.
The Kurdish conflict in Turkey has claimed more than
37,000 lives since 1984 when the PKK took up arms
for Kurdish self-rule in the southeast of Turkey.
