President Seeks Russian Help

Receiving a Russian envoy visiting Iraq, President
Jalal Talabani asked Moscow to assist in ridding the
country of terrorism, which he termed a joint
struggle against something that threatens the entire
civilized world.

Abu Ghraib Jail “Empty”

Deputy Justice Minister Yusho Ibrahim has announced
that the Abu Ghraib jail had no more inmates as of
August 15. The facility is now completely controlled
by the Iraqi authorities, who have yet to decide
what to do with it, he said. The United States
military says it is transferring 3,000 detainees to
other American-run prisons.

United Nations Head to Visit Iraq

Sources at the Iraqi foreign ministry have confirmed
that United Nations Secretary General Kofi Anan is
to visit Iraq next week to meet Prime Minister Nouri
al-Maliki and other senior government officials. The
visit is expected to give a boost to the national
reconciliation and dialogue process.
