UK, August 19,
2006 ,-- An Iraqi Kurd asylum seeker was mugged and
stabbed in a street attack.
Tawana Mauluddin, 22, who speaks little English, was
walking to a Preston corner shop when a gang of five
youths pounced.
They asked for money but then set upon him, stabbed
him in the back and made off with £155.
The attack happened on the corner of Acregate Lane
and Cemetery Road in Ribbleton at around 8.45pm on
Thursday.
Now Tawana, from Kurdistan, is recovering at home in
Ribbleton.
He was taken to hospital following the attack but
released later the same evening.
His landlord, Osman Ahmed, who runs Excalibur Car
Wash on Egbert Street, Preston, said the police
arrived on the scene 25 minutes after the 999 call
was made.
An ambulance turned up 15 minutes after that.
He said: "The gang demanded money off him but he was
oblivious to what they were saying apart from that
it was about money.
"He can barely speak a word of English. The lads
searched his pockets and took £155.
"He's got a flesh wound but it's not penetrated his
lungs or internal organs. He's got scratches and
marks all over his body."
The gang included black and white youths. They were
joined by another three youths as the attack took
place. |

As Tawana was being assaulted, his friend and
housemate, Bairstoon Ahmed, 25, arrived on the scene
and he was also attacked.
Bairstoon, who suffered a twisted ankle and
bruising, spoke of behalf of the pair and said: "We
were only going to buy some cigarettes and we were
attacked by eight people.
"I am very sorry this has happened to my friend.
It's left him with a lot of pain.
"I'm very scared now. I can't walk properly."
Osman Ahmed said he was disappointed with the police
response. He said: "We had already bandaged him up
with some cling film and put a belt around it to
stop any infection.
"An officer turned up on his own with a first aid
box with nothing in it.
"Had it been a serious wound, what would have
happened? This guy could have been dead. Their
response time was diabolical."
A spokesman for Lancashire Police said the matter
was being dealt with by officers from Preston CID.
He said: "An officer was on the scene four minutes
after being dispatched –13 minutes after we first
got the call. He discovered a man with a minor wound
to his back. It's being fully investigated."
He said officers were due to speak to Tawana
yesterday with the help of an interpreter.
Anyone with information is
asked to ring Preston Police on 01772 203203 or
Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
