Erbil,
Kurdistan-Iraq, August 15, -- In a special meeting
of the Kurdistan Regional Government Council of
Ministers chaired by the acting Prime Minister on 13
August, ministers discussed current Regional issues
and in particular how to deliver fuel, electricity
and water in the Kurdistan Region.
After discussing both short and long term solutions
for delivering these services, the participants
agreed unanimously to establish four committees: two
high operational committees to analyse and recommend
solutions to the electricity and fuel problems (oil,
benzene, petrol, diesel and gas) and to advise how
to meet the needs of the Kurdistan Region; a
committee to inspect market prices and property
rents and to recommend suitable solutions for both;
and a committee to analyse the employee payroll
system, to recommend a new system that suits current
living standards and circumstances, and in
particular to review lower level salaries and limit
the difference between the highest and lowest pay
rates.
The issue of the recent illegal and disorderly
demonstrations in some areas of the Region was also
discussed at length.
The Council of Ministers insisted on people’s
political freedom, on their right to demonstrate,
and their protection during such demonstrations, if
licensed by the Ministry for the Interior and as
long as demonstrations remain within legal
boundaries.
At the same time, the Council of Ministries decided
to ban any demonstration without official permission
and to disallow attacks on any government offices or
public and private properties.
Those disobeying will be prosecuted according to the
law in order to protect the public interest and the
rights of all people in the Region.
Issued by the Council of Ministers, Erbil, Kurdistan
– Iraq, 13 August 2006.
