Agreement between Government and Asia Cell halted
Erbil , Kurdistan
Asia Cell, one of the two major mobile network
companies in Kurdistan Region will not expand into
Erbil and Dohuk governates, a written statement
issued by the Ministry of Communication said Monday.
Asia Cell which is now operating in Sulaimaniyah and
surrounding districts was planned to extend its
network and be introduced into the rest of the areas
in Kurdistan Region.
"We worked hard to re-arrange mobile networks in
Kurdistan so that Asia Cell could work in Erbil and
Duhok governorates, but it became clear that this
problem can not be solved by us," said the statement
without revealing further details.
Refugees mass migrate into the Region: UN offers
help
Erbil, Kurdistan
Kurdish Human Rights minister received a high UN
delegation for refugees' affairs headed by Jan Verdo,
representative of the commission in Iraq, along with
a number of prominent UN officials.
According to latest statistics, 50,000 expatriate
families have arrived in the city of Sulaimaniya so
far.
The mass migration of people into northern parts of
the country seems to be continuing while experts
predict that in the short run it will have negative
effects on the economic structure of the Region.
The UN delegation stated that they are ready to
offer aid in any project that the ministry of Human
Rights is requiring in order to face the crisis.
Nine solicitors from Duhok to participate in
Anfal trial
Dohuk , Kurdistan
Nine solicitors from Duhok will participate in the
trial of Saddam Hussein, beginning 21 August, in
which the former president of Iraq will stand
accused of perpetrating the genocidal Anfal
Campaign.
“We were told to begin preparing ourselves a few
months ago,” Abdul Khaliq Salman, member of the
Kurdistan Solicitors’ Syndicate, said.
Salman revealed that there had been attempts by the
syndicate to have the tribunal moved to Duhok city
to allow families of the victims of Anfal to
participate in the trial.
Too many opinions delay draft of Constitution
Erbil , Kurdistan
The chief of Kurdistan Region's Constitution
Committee, Fursat Ahmed, said the reason the
constitution draft was delayed was because of the
amount of suggestions and opinions expressed in
regard to the formation of the Constitution.
"The Constitution, after it is drafted, will be
voted on by the Region's President, Prime Minister
and Parliament Speaker, and then will be voted on by
people in a national referendum," said Ahmed in a
press conference last week.
Ahmed said the second reason why the Constitution
was delayed was because a number of members in the
Constitution Writing Committee were on trips outside
the country.
Delays in passport issuing
The new passports will be issued only in Baghdad
despite Kurdish objection
No passports have been issued for the past four
months, head of passport office in Dohuk said
Thursday.
"It has been 4 months since we received passports
from central government in Baghdad last time. We
have received none of the new passports either,"
Nawzad Majeed Suliman, Director of passports office
in Dohuk said.
The new passports will be issued only in Baghdad
despite Kurdish objection
Halabja students mark the anniversary of
Hiroshima
Halabja , Kurdistan
Thousands of Japanese took to the streets of Tokyo
to mark the 61 anniversary of the nuclear barrage on
Hiroshima.
Survivals and relatives of the victims of Hiroshima
attack, and people from more than 140 countries
including a number of Halabja students from the
University of Sulaimaniya participated in the
occasion last week. The gathering took place in
Hiroshima Peace Park where thousands of people were
killed on August 6, 1945.
Nearly 140000 people were killed in Hiroshima out of
then 350000 residents of the city in the closing
week of the World War Two.
Three days following the offensive, on August 9,
another bomb hit a second Japanese city, Nagasaki.
Anfal victims numbers to be studied
Erbil , Kurdistan
KRG Minister of Martyrs and Anfal, Chinar Saad
Abdullah, has received a delegation from an
organization specializing in the Anfal campaign and
the victims of chemical weapons.
Abdullah stated her ministry?s aim to conduct a
study into the number of Anfal victims. Following
the meeting, it was announced that a special
committee would be established for the study of the
Anfal campaign.
