Big Mosque burnt down in Sulaimaniyah

Sulaimaniyah,
Kurdistan-Iraq, -- A Mosque, known as the Big Mosque
(Mizgewti Gewre) of Sulaimaniyah, was burned down
Saturday night as a result of an electric short
circuit, police said Sunday.
Firefighters could extinguish the fire only after it
had demolished parts of the Mosque’s building. No
casualty was reported and the material damages were
limited, police spokesman said.
Eyewitness said the fire began at 9 am when a
section of the building caught fire.
Police commissioner Ali Muhammad told the Globe the
fire was just an accident caused by electricity
short circuit and ruled out any organized
criminality. |

He described the damage as “not profound”. He added
that the fire-fighters rushed to the scene seven
minutes after it was started.
“If the fire fighters had arrived minutes later, the
fire would take over the second flour where the
office of the Kurdistan Clerics Union is located.
The Big Mosque of Sulaimaniyah is situated in the
center of the city. At nights, hundred of Arab
labors stay at the mosque and use it as a rest
place.
