Big Mosque burnt down in Sulaimaniyah 8.8.2006

Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan-Iraq, -- A Mosque, known as the Big Mosque (Mizgewti Gewre) of Sulaimaniyah, was burned down Saturday night as a result of an electric short circuit, police said Sunday.

Firefighters could extinguish the fire only after it had demolished parts of the Mosque’s building. No casualty was reported and the material damages were limited, police spokesman said.

Eyewitness said the fire began at 9 am when a section of the building caught fire.

Police commissioner Ali Muhammad told the Globe the fire was just an accident caused by electricity short circuit and ruled out any organized criminality.

“If the fire fighters had arrived minutes later, the fire would take over the second flour where the office of the Kurdistan Clerics Union is located.

The Big Mosque of Sulaimaniyah is situated in the center of the city. At nights, hundred of Arab labors stay at the mosque and use it as a rest place.
