Fuel shortages leave at least
15 people injured in protests in Kurdistan
Sulaimaniyah,
Kurdistan-Iraq, August 7, -- At least 15 people were
injured among them Iraqi police officers in protests
calling for an end to a fuel crisis in several
cities in northern Iraqi Kurdistan.
Iraqi cities are witnessing long lines at gas
stations, which led to escalating fuel shortage.
As a result of today's protests in the Iraqi Kurdish
town Derbenkhan, southeast of Sulaimaniyah, ten
people were injured including two police officers.
Late on Sunday, five people were injured including
one police officer in clashes and fire shots in a
similar protest.
In the black markets, fuel prices sky-rocketed to
1,500 Iraqi dinars per one liter, the equivalent of
one USD to the liter, while the official price does
not exceed 350 dinars.
Hundreds of Kurdish
youths in Derbandikhan town (Derbandikhan dam)
demonstrated today Monday, demanding better
electricity supply and the release of their
colleagues were arrested on Sunday.
Soran Karim, 25 years old primary school teacher in
Derbandikhan said "They must release the detainees
unconditionally." He added, "then we will bring to
the authorities to talk about the question of
providing electricity."
Late yesterday, four young demonstration organizers
were arrested, the demonstration against the
backdrop of the publication of a statement in which
they announced by the inhabitants of the town Derbandikhan dams to protest of lack of services
such as power and fuel.
Soran said, "They provide us with electricity for 8
to 10 hours a day at the time we have one of the
main sources of generating electricity form
Derbandikhan dam"
Derbandikhan dam is about 65 km south-east of
Sulaimaniyah city on Seruan River, which is one of
the five branches flowing into the Tigris River.
Derbandikhan dam is one of the two dams located in
the Kurdistan region of Iraq which is a source of
electricity production.
The source from the demonstration organizers
preferred to remain anonymous said "To prevent a
demonstration in Derbandikhan, yesterday the Kurdish
security forces arrested four persons from the
organizers of the demonstration and that they move
from house to house to arrest others."
The source added that a number of young people fled
the region fear of arrest.
A source from Hawlati newspaper (Kurdish independent
weekly) announced the arrest of Ali Hama Salih, a
correspondent for the newspaper in Derbandikhan.
Colonel Mohammed Karim, Director of Security in
Germiyan stated yesterday evening, Sunday, "By an
order from the Minister of Interior, we will arrest
any person who intends demonstration organazation without
official permission. "
