Sulaimaniyah,
Kurdistan-Iraq, 5 August 2006 - Hundreds of Kurdish
youths staged a protest Saturday over the shortage
of fuel and electricity and lack of services in a
village in Kifry.
About 300 people gathered in front of the Kifry
offices of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK),
headed by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, and hurled
stones at the building.
Guards fired bullets in the air in an attempt to
disperse the crowd, which reportedly tried to storm
the building.
Eyewitnesses reported that youths also stormed the
only gas station in the village and smashed petrol
pumps and other equipment.
An official from the PUK said that party leaders met
with some of the protestors to discuss their
demands.
