Kurdistan: Three explosions in Erbil, 3 killed, 30 injured 28.8.2006

Erbil, Kurdistan-Iraq, August 27, -- At least three people were killed and more than 33 were injured Sunday in three explosions that rocked the Kurdistani (northern Iraqi) city of Erbil, a source of the Iraqi police told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

The first explosion took place in the Wasiti neighborhood when a driver blew up the car he was driving. The explosion killed the driver and a civilian guard posted in front of the Kurdish Naourooz center. Over 30 people were injured as a result of the incident, which also destroyed 18 vehicles.

The second car explosion targeted the Dumez committee. But the guards were able to kill the suicide attacker before he triggered the explosion.

The third suicide car explosion targeted a police patrol on the way to the Dumez committee, the police source said.

Meanwhile, the head of the Multi-National Force in South West Kirkuk, Colonel Hensen said that the call on Iraqis to volunteer in the army was made "to fill the gap in the number of servicemen." He predicted that up to 600 volunteers would be selected and would be distributed to the various army divisions.
