Your claim that “the Kurdish parties that inflate
the Shiites’ majority have never much cared about
what goes on outside Iraqi Kurdistan is unfair (“A
Long, Bad Six Weeks,’’ editorial, July 26).
Kurdish parties have been at the forefront of
efforts to build a federal democracy in Iraq.
Kurdish ministers in Baghdad have worked diligently
toward that goal, braving the terrorists daily to
perform their duties.
Furthermore, Kurds have not inflated the Shiite
majority in Iraq; rather, we have constantly bridged
the differences between Iraq’s communities. |

Kurdish leaders played a key role in bringing Sunni
Arabs into the political process. Zalmay Khalilzad,
the American ambassador to Baghdad, recently
validated that role at a Congressional hearing.
Lastly, many thousands of Kurds have joined the
Iraqi security forces and have led the fight against
terrorists, not only for the protection of Kurdistan
but also to ensure victory in Iraq. Many Kurds have
died fighting outside Kurdistan; their sacrifice
deserves acknowledgment and respect.
While we will continue to protect Iraqi Kurdistan
and its advances in the last decade, we will also
continue to play a constructive and leading role in
Baghdad.
