According to
Turkish Daily News, the per capita spending from
the state's budget is most generous in the “Kurdish
provinces” Dersim (Tunceli), Hakkari, Elaziz (Elazığ)
and Bingöl and the Turkish capital Ankara.
Each person in Dersim (Tunceli) received YTL 1,043.3
from the state budget while this figure was YTL
848.1 for Ankara, YTL 566.8 for Hakkari, Elazığ with
YTL 513, Eskişehir YTL 466.2 and Kastamonu with YTL
445.1.
An
official website of the Turkish government also
states that the Turkish state has collected 291
million YTL of tax from Amed (Diyarbakir) but has
spent four times more: 1.35 Billion YTL.
The Turkish state also collected 23 million YTL from
Hakkari, but spent more than ten times more: 332
million YTL. According to a Turkish individual this
is the same for all cities where Kurds live. |

But why the
EU urges Ankara then to tackle endemic poverty
in the Kurdish southeast? Where is all the money
going?? Is it going to the expensive military and
police stations in the Kurdish cities? Or feudal
elites supported by the Turkish government?
If the Turkish state is really investing so much
into the Kurdish regions, then they are really doing
something wrong. The recent rise of suicides among
Kurdish girls and the lack of Kurdish girls going to
schools is an indicator that there is a radical
change in the policies of the Turkish state.
There is a mentality in Turkey to blame every
problem of the Kurds on the PKK. But the PKK is not
controlling the state budget nor do they have the
power to improve the economical situation of the
Kurds in the southeast.
If the Turkish state doesn’t improve their attitude
towards the southeast and the Kurdish people in
general, nothing changes.
Kurds in Turkey know why Turkey fails to help them.
It’s the same reason why Turkey does not recognise
the new Iraqi passport with Kurdish script. It’s the
same reason why the friendly Turkish neighbour of
Kurds in Iraq, intentionally
closes the border to cause them headaches.
