Ireland, -- A
high-powered campaign by local trade union officials
and activists has been launched in Waterford to try
to persuade the Minister for Justice, Michael
McDowell, to grant status and leave to stay in
Ireland for a young Kurdish man.
Mr Yusuf Isik, of Viking House, Waterford, has been
told he must leave the State and report to Dublin by
the end of July for deportation to Turkey.
Mr Isik left Turkey over three years ago following
his refusal to do his required National Military
Service. As a Kurdish trade unionist and activist,
he was opposed to the manner in which the military
treated his native people.
“Yusuf, a young construction worker, has resided in
Waterford for three years and has made many friends”
said David Lane, a SIPTU full time organiser.
“He has many offers of full-time employment locally
and if returned to Turkey will face a long prison
sentence” he went on.
Officials from other unions, including the AT&GWU,
as well as officials from the Waterford Council of
trade Unions, along with local council-lors David
Cullinane and Joe Kelly, are expected to sign a
letter pleading with Minister McDowell to grant
status and leave to remain in Ireland for Mr Yusuf
Isik.
