Erbil, Sulaimaniyahh, Duhok, Kirkuk, Kurdistan-Iraq, 30 July

KRG President met Iraqi Defense Minister and Chief of Staff‎

Massoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, received the Iraqi Defense ‎Minister, Abdul Qadir Al Ubaidi, and the Iraqi Chief of Staff, Babakir Zebari, ‎Wednesday. The Iraqi Defense Minister revealed plans to expand the Federal Iraqi ‎Army and stated his commitment to the development of army institutions. ‎President Barzani stressed the importance of structuring the Federal Iraqi Army on a ‎non-sectarian basis, whilst supporting the agenda of the Iraqi Defense Ministry. ‎

KRG Minister of Agriculture announces development projects‎

The Turkish Erki Company and the Autobahn Company, working in cooperation with ‎the KRG Agriculture Ministry, have successfully implemented a number of projects ‎in Kurdistan. In a meeting with the directors of both companies, KRG Agriculture ‎Minister Abdul-Aziz Tayyib made clear his ministry’s desire to continue to support ‎further projects in the region, including training courses for agricultural workers, ‎building greenhouses and further developing the food industry.

Ministry of Reconstruction builds roads in Balakayeti Region

The Ministry of Reconstruction is implementing four major projects in the Balakayeti ‎Region in cooperation with the Erbil Road Directorate. A 6.5km road connecting Warte with the Akoyan Valley is nearing completion. ‎Further roads connecting Balakayeti with Pishdar, and Hafiz with Degala are also ‎under construction. It is hoped that these developments will encourage the return of ‎villagers to their villages. ‎

Construction of General Airport in Dohuk

The Governor of Dohuk, Tamar Ramadan, has received an American delegation for civil affairs, headed by Jack Jackelford, the Director of Construction Programs for the American Consulate in Mosul and Major Lomidicko the Commander of Battalion 403 for civil affairs in Dohuk. During the meeting, they discussed the situations within the city in terms of construction projects and administration as well execution of service projects.
They also discussed the projects that the American Forces for civil affairs will execute in Dohuk, the head of the delegation explained that they are prepared to carry out several new projects, particularly projects for people in urgent need. The Governor of Dohuk thanked the American Forces and clarified that the main projects that the people of Dohuk require are, the construction of a general airport in Dohuk, expansions to the Cham Barakat water project, solutions to the mounting refuse crisis, the head of the delegation cited that the proposals of the province would be adequately considered.

2000 apartments to be built in Dohuk

With an aim of overcoming the housing crisis in the Dohuk Province, Tamar Ramadan, the Governor of Dohuk Province has signed an agreement with the Turkish company "Sahar" to build 2000 apartments worth some one and a half million dollars.
The site of this project is in the "Gre Base district" where four old apartments and some houses already stand, Hashim Mohammad, the Chairman of the Dohuk Municipality declared that 445 apartments would be completed within 8 to10 months in the first step and the priority occupants will be those who are currently living in the old apartments.

Tamar Ramadan declared that presently he is in the process of negotiations with American company to build up vertical apartments in Dohuk.

International access on landline phones in Erbil

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Communications has announced that local landline phones will be connected to the international network and will be operated by pre-paid cards instead of monthly phone bills, reported the P.N.A news agency last week.
Haydar Sheikh Ali, the Minister of Communication in the Kurdistan region said, “We aim at benefiting from the private sector in the filed of communication and we have signed a contract with Nawroz Telecom company to take over the switchboards from the government,” of this exciting development.
The minister continued that the change in the system is aimed toward offering the best communication services to the public and revealed that the move had in part to do with the frequent cases of clients not paying old monthly phone bills.

K.R.G Deputy Premier discusses Halabja water project with the German I.G.G.O Company

The Kurdistan Regional Government Deputy Prime Minister, Omar Fattah, received Richter Gout the manager of the I.G.G.O Company from Germany to discuss the mechanisms of implementing the Halabja water project, reported the Xabat paper last week.
During the meeting, the deputy premier asked the I.G.G.O manager to provide the necessary equipment for the sufficient means to carry out the water project in Halabja and voiced his government’s full readiness to facilitate the works of the German company in implementing the project.

KRG Minister of Health: 250-bed hospital is needed in Zakho

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Minister of Health, Zryan Othamn, has visited the Zakho Public Hospital in Zakho and met with the hospital manager and a number of its physicians. The Minister’s visit was aimed at learning at close proximity of the current climate within the hospital.
In the meeting, the minister voiced his ministry's readiness to support the health sector in Zakho and provide the necessary medical supplies and appliances, stating that there was an urgent need for a 250-bed hospital to be built within the facility of Zakho Public Hospital.

The building of 1606 citizens homes in Halabja

The demolished houses of 1606 Halabja residents have been earmarked for reconstruction, following last months attempts to clean the quarters of Halabja city, most of the houses that were affected by chemical weapons on 1988 have been cleaned successfully, these houses will be reconstructed with the cooperation of the residents.
The list of names of the houses occupants was sealed on the walls of the Human Rights Office but was removed on the very same day.
The deputy of Halabja municipality told The Hewler Post “a committee is visiting all the destroyed houses and registering the names of the owners, currently the names of 1606 persons have been registered and houses will be built for the owners, the rest of the names will be registered later,” with regards to the list which was removed, she stated that people were tampering with the names, therefore the list was removed t but still the list remains on the municipal computer system.

Talks to form K.R.G-Italy Joint chamber of commerce

Addressing a business delegation from Italy last week, the Kurdistan Regional Government Minister of Planning, Othman Shwani, voiced his belief in the necessity of forming a joint commercial chamber between the Kurdistan Region and Italy and stressed that Kurdistan will be a significant business centre within the region in the very near future.
A delegation representing businesses from Italy paid a visit to the K.R.G Minister of Planning to discuss the possibility of instituting business relations between Italian companies and the K.R.G.
In the meeting, Mr. Shwani stated that Kurdistan Region was a secure and stable region for investment, adding that the newly drafted investment law by the K.R.G will facilitate the activities of foreign companies in exploiting potential opportunities by investing their capital in the Kurdistan region and taking part in the rebuilding process, thus having an influence in an emergent market from its genesis.
The Minister clarified, “The K.R.G’s priority areas within public services are improving electricity and water supplies, housing, and the reconstruction of villages," of his institutions initial concerns. The guest delegation pledged to relay the messages from the minister to Italian companies on their return home and encourage Italian firms to invest in the Kurdistan region and play an active role in the reconstruction of the region.
