Nawzad Company to launch satellite TV channel
The Nawzad Company is working to launch a new and
independent news-oriented Kurdish satellite channel
called “Pak TV”, Alay Azadi newspaper reported last
week.
Nawzad Company is currently developing the Pak TV
project, and has already submitted a proposal to the
Kurdistan Regional Government Ministry of Culture
for approval. It is planned that the new channel
will be based in Sulaimaniyah city and will air its
programmes on the HOTBIRD group.
Kurdistan Teachers Union threatens strike
The Erbil-based Kurdistan Teachers Union, KTU, has
threatened to go on strike if the Kurdistan Regional
Government fails to increase teachers’ salaries by
the beginning of the next school year.
In an interview with AWENA paper, the head of the
KTU, Sheik Haffan Naqshbandy, stated that they have
asked the government to add a sum of 100-150
thousand Iraqi dinars to the current monthly
salaries of the teachers and warned
“If the government does not meet this demand by the
start of the next academic year, teachers will quit
teaching and go on strike”.
It is believed that teachers across the Kurdistan
Region will participate in the strike, if called.
Warka Bank branch opens in Kurdistan
The Qala Branch of Warka Bank was opened on Tuesday.
A representative of Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani
stressed the importance of the development, stating
“Banks have a very crucial role to play in
developing the economic infrastructure and
encouraging investment”. The Warka Branch currently
has 33 branches across the world, including the
Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
Massoud Barzani: Kirkuk must be returned to
Kurdistan Region
In a visit to Sulaimaniyah, KRG President Massoud
Barzani, insisted that Article 140 of the Iraqi
Constitution, for the normalization of Kirkuk, be
implemented and stated that Kirkuk should be
returned to the Kurdistan Region. President Barzani
also stressed his commitment to supporting the
people of Kirkuk, regardless of ethnicity or
religion.
"The brotherhood that is present among all the
ethnic varieties in Kirkuk should be aided towards
better development, and every effort should be made
to prevent those who want to destroy this
relationship."
Airport and Oil Refinery to be built in Kirkuk
Barham Salih, Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq, has
supported the implementation of a number of projects
in Kirkuk, including the construction of an airport
and an oil refinery. Salih also revealed plans by
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to form a
committee to normalize the situation in Kirkuk.
Brazilian exports fail medical tests by KRG
border authorities
Duhok’s Medical Monitoring Department has announced
that since June a large quantity of food items from
Brazil and other countries were confiscated by
authorities at the Ibrahim Khalil border crossing
and denied entry into the Kurdistan region. The
items all failed medical tests by the KRG’s border
authorities.
Speaking to AWENA paper, Yassin Sleman, Director of
the Medical Monitoring Department in Duhok, revealed
that the authorities have prevented the entry of 924
tons of cooking oil, 22 tons of soft drinks and 10
tons of dry juice into the Kurdistan Region.
The official also added that after failing lab tests
conducted on the confiscated items, a huge quantity
of exports from Brazil, including 721,360 tons of
chicken meat, 47,980 tons of bagged chicken parts,
2,980 toms of fish, 21,876 tons of tea seed, 1,900
tons of lentil and 165kg of medicine were
incinerated at the discretion of the relevant
government authorities.
