Sulaimaniyah and Roma join in celebrating Italy's victory‎ 11.7.2006

Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan-Iraq , --Italy has beaten France. Just minutes after the end of the final game, hundreds of supporters took to the streets of Suleimaniya and celebrated the victory until late midnight.

Thousands of young enthusiasts gathered at the Nali Park of Sulaimaniyah watching the final match between France and Italy through a big screen that was set up by the city’s municipality.

Dana Hassan, 21, who originally was a Brazilian fan, supported the Italian team more than Italian fans did, he said, since Italy was “courageous enough” to take revenge of the ‘Yellow Brazilians’, Dana said, as Brazil lost to France earlier in the quarter final. “The important thing is that France loses,” he said.

Hundreds of Italian flags were raised in the area whereas only one French flag was seen in the park.

Sirwan Mohammad, 23, a university student was a fan of the French for 12 years but today he was unable to express his excitement. “Here, most of the fans support Italy; if Italy loses they might attack French supporters, therefore I watch the match noiselessly,” he said.

Armed security forces were placed in and outside of the park to maintain calm and make sure nothing went wrong.

Following the penalty shoot-out, Italy’s supporters took to the streets and in some areas even blocked the roads, celebrating the victory.

Bakhtiyar Hamed, 19, who was wearing an Italian T-Shirt, was a true supporter of Italy since 1994. He said he had mourned Italy’s losses in the past, but this time, “if Italy lost, I would wear black clothes for 40 days”.

French supporters, on the other hand, seemed depressed. They left the park soon after the match was over. Rawa Mahmoud, 16, was a Roster fan. He told the Globe with tears gathered in his eyes, “France played very well but Italy was lucky,”

He was upset only for Zainaddin Zidan’s “unpleasant” action. “If only he had controlled himself still he would have been the best player of the tournament.”
