Sulaimaniyah,
Kurdistan-Iraq, July 25, -- A crowd of blind people
completely block the street in front of the
governor’s office in Sulaimaniyah in an effort to
have the governor honor his promises to them last
week.
If necessary, the rally is to be continued on foot
to the building of the Council of Ministers in Erbil
the regional capital of the Kurdistan Regional
Government.
On the eve of the 17th anniversary of founding the
Kurdistan Blinds’ Union KBU, a number of the union’s
members went on strike in their office in
Sulaimaniyah that continues for three days but did
not attract the attention of the local government
officials.
Determined to have their voice heard, strikers made
another effort by visiting the governor of
Sulaimaniyah who promised to meet their demands by
pledging to build an office for KBU at the cost of
$1300000 million and paying the sum of $10 million
to cover the monthly salaries and the and the office
rental costs of union in Sulaimaniyah.
However, governor promises could not ease the
concerns of an estimated 3000 visually disabled
individuals in Kurdistan region whose
representatives brought the street before the
governor’s building into a complete standstill.
“What the government is to meet are only two demands
out of eleven” Said 32 year old Hezha Ahmed who lost
his eye-sight in an ammunition explosion incident 16
years ago. The government has completely turned a
blind eye to the blind in Kurdistan region, Hezha
added.
Provision of proper accommodation and housing for
the blind, employment opportunities, educational
support, medical treatment, and social insurance
were among the other demands voiced by the
demonstrators.
