Iraqi President Jalal
Talabani has stated that previous agreements signed
during the Saddam Hussein era between Turkey and
Iraq are no longer valid.
Talabani said that the new Iraqi government would
not accept former agreements which allowed Turkey to
carry out cross-border operations into Iraqi
territory.
"The Iraqi government has expressed its unease to
the Turkish and Iranian embassies about the
cross-border operations," Talabani told reporters on
Thursday after a meeting with Iraqi Kurdish leader
Masoud Barzani.
Turkish government last year announced that she
would not rule out the possibility of cross-border
operations if systematic and deliberate damage was
inflicted on Turkey.
In the 1990s, the Turkish army crossed the Iraqi
border to carry out operations against PKK militants
hiding in the mountainous of Kurdistan (northern
Iraq).
