Iraq's PM Maliki calls for formation of national Iraqi front to combat terrorism

ERBIL, Kurdistan-Iraq, July 10 ,-- Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki called here Monday for the formation of a national Iraqi front to combat terrorism.

In a speech at the Parliament of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Al-Maliki stressed that fighting terrorists will not be achieved without unity, and pointed out that it is important to comply with the Iraqi constitution, which he described as a main instrument to solve problems.

"Our destiny is to work together in brotherhood to defeat terrorism and insurgency," Maliki, a Shi'ite, told the Kurdistan regional parliament in (northern Iraq). "We have no choice but to defeat those who want to return us to the black days."

He emphasized that the government is doing its best to rebuild the country, develop economy, and improve living standards, pointing out that the people of Iraq will notice the difference between national and dictatorial governments.

Al-Maliki said national reconciliation is essential even though there is no enmity among Iraqi groups, adding that it is a way to form a unified national front that fights the country's enemies.

He called for formation of a military force and security systems that are able to combat terrorism.

The prime minister stressed it is important to strengthen the tries between the Iraqi government and the government of Kurdistan.

Head of the Parliament Adnan Al-Mofti described Al-Maliki's visit as important for the building of the new Iraq.

He announced his and his people's support to the government, stressing that it should fulfill its promises for the Iraqis.

Al-Mofti hoped the government would achieve equality and would national reconciliation would succeed.

Al-Maliki was accompanied by a high-ranking government delegation including Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh and Oil Minister Hussein Al-Shahristani.
