DIYARBAKIR,
Kurdistan-Turkey, June 29 (Reuters) , - Turkish
forces killed a member of the outlawed Kurdistan
Workers' Party (PKK) and detained another during
clashes on Thursday near the Iraqi border, the
regional governor's Web site said.
As part of an ongoing operation, Turkish security
forces opened fire on the Kurdish rebels, yelling
for them to submit.
The military has focused its operations near the
Iraqi border as Ankara says PKK rebels have been
holed up in the mountains of the neighbouring
country preparing attacks in Turkey.
The group, considered a terrorist organisation by
Ankara, the United States and the European Union,
launched a campaign in 1984 for an ethnic homeland
in the country's predominantly Kurdish Southeast.
It broke a unilateral ceasefire in 2004.
Turkey, which is trying to join the European Union,
has improved Kurdish cultural rights, but Brussels
still urges it to do more.
