Explosion hits Turkish resort, kills four 26.6.2006

ISTANBUL, June 25 (Reuters) - A blast probably caused by an exploding gas canister at a popular Turkish tourist area killed four people, including a Norwegian and a Ukrainian, and injured about 25 on Sunday, CNN Turk television said.

It was unclear whether the explosion was an accident.

Police said the blast happened in a park surrounding the Manavgat waterfall about 100 km (60 miles) to the east of the city of Antalya, Turkey's largest resort area.

The Mediterranean resort of Antalya is popular with tourists from western Europe and Russia.

Manavgat Mayor Zeynel Senol told the state-run Anatolian news agency the explosion happened about 5:40 pm and that the cause of the explosion was not clear.

Kurdish separatists, leftist and Islamist militants have all carried out bomb attacks in Turkey on military and civilians targets.

Ten days ago a bomb left in a trash container at a major outdoor bus station wounded at least three people in central Istanbul, another major tourist area. Kurdish militants claimed responsibility for that blast.

Scores of soldiers and rebels of the outlawed separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) have been killed in clashes amid a rise in violence in the largely Kurdish southeast this year.

More than 30,000 people, mostly Kurds, have been killed in the separatist conflict since the PKK took up arms against the state in 1984 with the aim of carving out an ethnic homeland.
