Syria: Assad releases Kurdish prisoners, Video's of Kurdistan 14.6.2006
By Vladimir van Wilgenburg, Journalist, Netherlands 4.June

On 31 March 2005 the Syrian dictatorial president Assad released 312 Kurds from prison. The Kurds, who were released after President Bashar al-Assad's decision, took part in the clashes with Arabs. This despite that Arabs provoked the Kurds and started the fight, there were no Arabs arrested or tortured like the Kurds were.

Kurds thanked Assad for this minor decision, they wanted all political detainees to be freed. The released Kurds being freed from Syrian oppression in prison, were welcomed by thousands of Kurds shouting KURDISTAN KURDISTAN. In West-Kurdistan (Syrian Kurds) thousands Kurds are stateless and Kurdish culture is forbidden.

Unrest in North-Kurdistan

Six killed were killed in riots in Colemerg (Hakkari), North-Kurdistan (15 November 2005). At least 16 were as clashes broke out between Kurdish protestors and Turkish police forces.

Kurds protest against Syria

On 17 March 2004 thousands Kurds poured into the streets of Hewler to protest the attacks against Kurds in Qamishlo. They showed a remarkable sense of unity of the Kurdish nation.
The sea of protestors carried thousands of Kurdish flags. The protestors were blocked by security forces while they were marching to the UN headquarter.

The marchers carried banners written on "Kurdistan is one. Qamihslo turned into Halabja." amid slogans of "Bassar Assad Stop the massacre against Kurds."

"They are trying to massacre us as they did in Halabja. We are protesting this. said a physically-handicapped protestors who carried a Kurdish flag around his neck.

"I want to call Syrian President Bassar Assad from here. Let all the world here our voice. Let such incidents not to be occurred. Let's live in peace." said another Kurdish protestor, Ahmed Salih, while speaking in Turkish language.

Angry Kurdish protestors trampled a Syrian flag under their feet to show their discomfort with the Syrian dictator regime.

Burial of Sheikh Mahmud Khaznawi

In Qamishlo, West-Kurdistan, a protest march was held in may 2005 against the murder of Sheikh Mohammed Mashuq Khaznawi, a 48-year-old Kurdish imam and Islamic scholar who has been killed by Syrian Baathist forces. In this march two Kurds died and one Syrian officer was shot.
