Sixty-Five Per Cent of Kurds Want Relations with
Israel
(Hawlati)
Sixty-five per cent of Iraqi Kurds think that
diplomatic relations between the Kurdistan Regional
Government and Israel are "necessary." Of (1,519
people polled in Iraqi Kurdistan,) 22 per cent said
it was not necessary for the two states to have
relations, while 12 per cent responded that they did
not have an opinion. Those Kurds who believed that
the Kurdistan Regional Government and Israel should
have relations cited the possible strengthening of
the Kurds' position in the region, Israel's
democracy, trade (between the two states,) the
existence of Kurds in Israel and that some Arab
countries have relations with Israel. Those who
didn't support establishing relations with Israel
cited Israel as an occupying state, its instability
and the fact that Kurdistan does not share borders
with Israel. The Kurdistan Institute for Political
Inquiries conducted the poll May 22 and May 27 in
the provinces of Erbil, Sulaimaniyah, Duhok and
Kurdish inhabited areas of Kirkuk.

Proposed Kirkuk Region Violates the Constitution
(Al-Ittihad)
Kirkuk provincial leader Ruzkar Ali said the
memorandum signed by some Kirkuk provincial council
members to form a Kirkuk region violates the
constitution. He said the issue should be solved
according to article 140 of the constitution and
that a referendum should be held following the
normalization of the city. (Arabs, primarily from
the south, were forced to move to Kirkuk and
long-time Kurdish residents moved out under Saddam
Hussein's regime.) Fourteen Arab and Turkmen members
have signed the memorandum, including some Arab
leaders who were displaced from the south.

UN Delegation Visits Kurdistan Region
(Al-Bayan)
Kurdistan government coordinator to the United
Nations, Deendar Zeebari, said a UN delegate would
visit the Kurdistan region next week to follow up on
displaced families from central Iraq who had fled to
Kurdistan because of the security situation. In a
press conference held in Erbil's Sheraton hotel,
Zeebari said the delegate would discuss the
possibility of aiding the families and that the
refugee affairs organization was aware of the
displaced families issue. Zeebari said that during
his last visit to Jordan, he discussed with the UN
team ways to support the development and rebuilding
of Iraq.

Fuel and Cooking Gas Crises Contained
(Al-Bayyna)
Hussein al-Bahar, director-general of the oil
products distribution company, said the fuel crisis
has been contained thanks to fuel imports and
production from local refineries. He affirmed that
the crisis would not occur again because of the oil
ministry workers' extra efforts. As for the cooking
gas, he said that supply would exceed people's
demands and his company would use an iron fist to
stop smuggling of cooking gas and other (oil
products) that people need.

weekly paper issued by the Hezbollah movement in
Iraq.)
