Vice president of Kurdistan region swears

Erbil, Kurdistan-Iraq, -- In an
irregular session held Wednesday June 21 at the national assembly
(the regional parliament) of the Kurdistan Regional Government in
Erbil, Kosrat Rasoul, a leading official of the Patriotic Union of
Kurdistan PUK, swore in as the vice president of the Iraqi Kurdistan
region.
Earlier at the session parliament members had approved the
appointment of Kosrat Rasoul as the vice of the president of
Kurdistan region.
The meeting at the parliament was attended by the president of the
Iraqi Kurdistan region Massoud Barzani, the prime minister of the
Kurdistan Regional Government Nechirvan Barzani, ministers of the
KRG new cabinet and representatives from the Kurdistani political
parties.
After the voice swore in, the president of Kurdistan region
delivered a speech in which he shed light on the strife of the
people of Kurdistan in history and the earlier differences between
the two major Kurdish political parties, the Patriotic Union of
Kurdistan PUK and Kurdistan Democratic Party KDP. |

In his address at the parliament, Barzani said that following 2003
when regional situations changed and having realized that interior
differences had cost them major achievements, KDP and PUK decided it
was time for them to unify efforts in the face of confronting
interests in the region.
Barzani said after the reconciliation, Kurds scored major
achievements in the new Iraq such as securing the post of the
president of Iraq, the deputy premier and foreign ministry posts
within the central Iraqi government and played a big role in
building the federal Iraq.
After swearing in, in a speech Rasoul pledged to work closely with
the president of Kurdistan region to carry out his recently
announced agenda. Rasoul`s speech focused on a number of issues such
as respecting human rights in Kurdistan region, freedom of assembly,
the participation of women in all aspects of life, creating job
opportunities for the youth in the government institutions, fighting
the current shortcomings of the regional government, encouraging the
private sector and foreign companies to invest in Kurdistan region
and promoting education and civil society in Kurdistan region.
The necessity of implementing article number 140 of the Iraqi
permanent constitution concerning Kirkuk issue was among other
concerns of the new vice president.
