ERBIL, Kurdistan-Iraq, June 7
(KUNA) -- Deputy Representative of UN Secretary General for
Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Iraq John Fakhori on
Wednesday asserted the creation of a suitable work mechanism for the
UN to deal with the government of the Kurdistan Region.
In a joint press conference with coordinator of the Kurdistan Region
government to the UN Dindar Zebari, Fakhori said the UN main mission
in Kurdistan is reconstruction and organizing UN works in the
region. He added that the purpose of his visit to Kurdistan is to
establish relationships with the government of Kurdistan in order to
better serve the region.
He noted that the situation in Kurdistan is stable and secure,
noting that the reconstruction process here made a step towards
development, which encourages the work of UN organizations.
Fakhori asserted that the UN is working in Iraq in accordance with
the Iraqi constitution, noting that the constitution gave the
permission to directly deal with any region in Iraq.
Meanwhile, Zebari said the visit is the first of its kind for such
delegation after forming the government of Kurdistan Region and the
Iraqi government, considering it a first step towards assisting and
supporting Kurdistan.
He noted that he touched on a number of recommendations to improve
the work of the UN in Kurdistan, expressing hope that the visit
would reinforce relationships between the Kurdistan government and
the UN.
