DIYARBAKIR,
Kurdistan-Turkey, -- Joost Lagendijk, Co-Chairman of
Turkey-EU Joint Parliamentary Commission, has
indicated that democracy was the only way to solve
Kurdish problem.
Delivering a speech at a round-table meeting held
under ''Civil Rights Project in Southeastern
Region'' in Diyarbakir, Lagendijk noted that
dialogue was very important for solution of several
problems.
Lagendijk underlined that as long as there was
violence in the region, there could not be any
investment there, stating that authorities should
also focus on economic and social development in the
region. He said that unless Turkey upgraded the
conditions of people living there (southeastern
region), it could not be a full member of the EU.
Replying to a question on minorities, Lagendijk
indicated that Europe's definition of minority was
different from Turkey's.
Stating that Kurds did not define themselves as
minority, Lagendijk said that however EU considered
Kurds minority. Lagendijk said that rights of
Turkish citizens of Kurdish origin should be
improved.
On the other hand, Lagendijk had meetings with
Diyarbakir Governor Efkan Ala and Mayor Osman
Baydemir.
