Kurdish Journalists' Union Proposed - Media monitor 9.5.2006
Press from 9.May.2006

Kurdish Journalists' Union Proposed (Awene)
Several journalists are drafting a proposal to form a free and professional Journalists' Union and have called on journalists to support their efforts. Simko Mohammad, who leads the project, said the goal is not to replace the Kurdistan Journalists' Syndicate but that journalists need (protection of their) professional rights, "which are violated daily." (The Kurdistan Journalists' Syndicate is a party-led organization that many journalists say do not properly defend them. Arrests and harassment of journalists by Kurdish security officials is on the rise.) Twenty-five journalists have signed the proposal.

Talabani Endorses Next Month's Reconciliation Conference
(Al-Adala)
President Jalal Talabani praised the Arab League's efforts to hold an Iraqi reconciliation conference from June 10 to June 11. In a phone call with Arab League secretary-general Amr Musa, the president thanked the league for its efforts (in creating the conference, which was originally scheduled for February.) The two discussed the latest developments in forming a national unity government. Musa said that he hoped the conference, with Talabani's endorsement, would be successful.

New Government's Top Priority: Eradicating Terrorism
(Al-Iraq al-Yoom)
The Independent Gathering of Iraq's Competent People secretary-general, Ali al-Dabbagh, said the government's top priorities are to spread security, eradicate terrorism, accelerate the rebuilding of Iraq and establish democratic organizations that guarantee prosperity. He said that Iraqis succeeded in narrowing the gaps that stopped the formation of the new government. He said the government would be run transparently and would eradicate terrorism that hurt the people. Dabbagh maintained that there are three types of terror: (al-Qaeda leader in Iraq Abu Musab) al-Zarqawi's gangs that kill the people with car bombs; remnants of the former regime who lost power; and terrorism from outside of the borders and from some Arab neighbouring states.

Forming a National Unity Government Necessary
(Baghdad)
The independent Iraqi tribal union held a symposium in al-Kadhimiya area (of Baghdad) discussing the compulsory displacement of Iraqi families who are under threat. They also emphasized that a national unity government (representing all political slates) must be formed without sectarianism or racism. The leader of the Iraqi association for development and human rights, Abdul Sattar al-Bayer, attended the symposium and said the national unity government means that all should carry responsibilities because of the current (crises,) including security and development. He maintained that patriotism would prevail and would help stabilize (Iraq.)
