Kirkuk Security Handed Over to Iraqi Forces

In a ceremony at Kaiwan military base (on May 2,)
multi-national forces officially gave control of
security in Kirkuk to Iraqi forces. The ceremony was
attended by the commander of the Iraqi army's fourth
division, the commander of the multi-national forces
in Kirkuk, Iraqi officers and Kirkuk administration
officials. Colonel David Gray said Iraqi forces in
Kirkuk have proved their ability to combat terror
and preserve stability in the area.

Journalists' Freedom Observatory Calls for
Protecting Journalists
(Al-Mada)
The journalists' freedom observatory has asked the
international community to protect journalists
working in Iraq and to form an international
committee to investigate the daily violations
against media workers. The observatory, in honour of
(the United Nations') World Press Freedom Day, said
those who committed crimes against journalists
should be tried in an international court. It called
on US forces and Iraqi authorities to conduct wide
investigations to uncover who is targeting
journalists, no matter which groups they belong to.
It asked that (authorities) take decisive steps to
protect journalists.

Three Hawlati Writers Punished in One Week
(Hawlati)
In the last week three writers have been questioned
by security, police and other government offices for
writing opinion pieces in Hawlati. Mohammad Barzi,
an engineer in Private Projects Commission, (wrote a
piece criticising Kurdish authorities.) (He said) he
was questioned by his boss and his name has been
removed from a list of people who were supposed to
be sent outside of Iraq (for training). Najad Ahmad,
(a student) wrote an article about education issues
at Salahaddin University; (he reported) that a
committee is investigating. And Hawlati reporter
Hawez Hawezi, was arrested again on Sunday for
another article he published in Hawlati "Era of
Shame." The general security office has sued him for
libel. This is the second time Hawez is been
arrested because of his writings.

Demonstration to Save the Palms
(Al-Bayan)
Karbala province witnessed mass demonstrations
participated by the local citizens of Karbala and
Husseiniya district asking the authorities to take
immediate actions to save their palm orchards and to
start treating insects that may ruin the palms. They
requested that the names of individuals opposing the
treatment be made public and that planes be used to
(kill) the insects. The demonstration was led by
Karbala governor Akil al-Kuzai, and several
provincial council and tribal council leaders
participated. The governor said the demonstrators
urged the authorities to set up strategic plans to
improve the agricultural resource and to aid Iraq's
economy.
Reconciliation Conference to Be Held in Baghdad
(Tareek al-Shaab)
Arab League secretary-general Amr Musa said the
Iraqi reconciliation conference will be held in
Baghdad next month. Musa said the conference will be
held after the new Iraqi government is formed. The
first session of the conference was held in Cairo,
and the second session will be held in Baghdad.
Jordanian foreign minister Abdul Ilah al-Khateb said
Iraq's stability would positively affect the entire
region and said it was necessary to have a united
Iraq.
