Czech Republic opens commercial liaison office in Erbil-Kurdistan 3.5.2006

Erbil, Kurdistan-Iraq, 2 May 2006. The Government of the Czech Republic opened its Liaison Office for Trade and Commerce in Erbil to promote commercial activities between the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and the Czech Republic.

The opening ceremony on Monday May, 1st, was performed by the Czech Republic Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaroslav Bašta and Ambassador Petr Voznica. Participants from the Kurdistan Region were Dr. Fuad Hussein, representing Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani, and Minister for the Interior Karim Sinjari, on behalf of Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani.

Other participants included the Ministers of Culture Sami Shoresh, Industry and Electricity Yonan Marqus Hanna, Minister of the Region Falah Mustafa Bakir and Erbil Governor Nawzad Hadi.

From the Czech Republic, the Vice President of the Confederation of Industry Mr. Stanislav Kazecky, and other senior business leaders also participated in the event.

All agreed that the opening of the liaison office builds an important bridge for both government and commercial relations, and that many useful projects will grow from this effort in the months and years to come.

This is the first foreign liaison office to be opened in the Kurdistan Region. Additional offices are expected to be opened within the coming months.

In keeping with the provisions of the Constitution of Iraq, the Kurdistan Regional Government plans to open trade and development offices in other countries.
