Erbil, Kurdistan, Iraq, 2 May
2006. The Kurdistan Regional Government hosted a high-level
delegation from the Czech Republic, which spent three days visiting
major sites in the Region and meeting with senior KRG officials,
including the Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani and KRG
Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani.
The Czech Republic delegation was led by Mr. Jaroslav Basta, Deputy
Minister of Foreign Affairs, and included Mr. Peter Voznica, the
Czech Republic Ambassador to Iraq. In addition, Mr. Stanislav
Kazecky, Vice President of the Confederation of Industry of the
Czech Republic led a number of private sector business leaders and
investors, who were encouraged by business opportunities which they
discussed with local leaders.
The Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic seeks to engage
in the industries of power, oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, modular
construction, road construction, water treatment, environmental and
waste management, consumer goods and crude oil refining.
The Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani welcomed the
delegation and was encouraged by the effort to further develop
cooperative relations between the Czech Republic and the Kurdistan
Region. Mr Barzani said, “This visit will promote closer ties and
greater cooperation between our region and the Czech Republic.”
In a subsequent meeting, KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani noted
that, “An important range of initiatives were discussed, including
private sector investment, assistance for Kurdistan’s historical
preservation efforts, and scholarship and educational cooperation.
We hope to see meaningful progress on all these issues in the coming
months and we welcome the interest shown by the Confederation of
Industry officials.”
The Czech Republic delegation also met with Deputy Prime Minister
Sarkis Aghajan and other Christian leaders during a visit to Ainkawa
and toured the Citadel, Erbil’s most ancient and famous site.
