In his continuous efforts to improve
coordination mechanisms between the Kurdistan Regional Government
institutions and the United Nations Agencies based in Erbil, the KRG
Coordinator to the UN and other international organizations'
affairs, Dr. Dindar Zebari, has performed a number of activities
since the establishment of his office just less than a year ago.
In this short period, this well organized Office of Coordination for
United Nations Affairs (OCUNA) of the Kurdistan government, located
in the Kurdish capital’s Council of Ministers, has been achieved
some major successes.
They include receiving many prominent international figures to
Iraq’s safe haven, Kurdistan, leading to the significant enhancement
of the KRG’s vision in the international community more than ever
before.
Amongst the many visits to Kurdistan by foreign international
agencies and organizations was that of a UNAMI delegation (the
United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq), headed by Chief
Administrative Officer John Griffith.
The topics discussed during this meeting included the suitability of
the new UN Regional Office in Erbil, as a result of the stable
security witnessed by foreigners in the region – something that has
also tempted a large number of massive companies and firms, in all
aspects of development and construction, to invest in Kurdistan.
Another delegation from UNAMI, this time headed by Yaqoub El-Hillo,
the Deputy Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Iraq (DHRC),
also visited the Kurdistan Region in the second week of March.
For the delegation, OCUNA scheduled and facilitated meetings with
the highest officials of the KRG and Kurdistan’s political
personnel, from both administrations at the time, Erbil and
Suleimaniah.
To further benefit society by taking part in its reconstruction and
development and avoid causing social disadvantages to their
communities, OCUNA met with the International Organization for
Migration’s Program Officer in charge of voluntary repatriation of
Iraqi refugees in Europe. This was also to discuss their planned
agenda for the Returnees Reintegration Programme in the region.
In addition to these fruitful meetings, OCUNA has also assisted in
the participation and selection of five technical staff from the
Kurdistan Regional Government for a training course conducted by
Human Rights Iraq office (UNHR) in the Jordanian capital, Amman.
In regards to a delay in conducting the UNICEF Multi Cluster Survey
(MICS3), OCUNA was approached to intervene and investigate the
reasons behind it.
The Coordinator started communications and supervised meetings
between UNICEF and the executive party from the KRG, namely the
Kurdistan Statistics Unit in Erbil and the Department of Statistics
in Suleimaniah. OCUNA was later able to successfully assist in
resolving the issue.
