ERBIL,
Kurdistan-Iraq (KUNA): “The Amir of Kuwait and all
Kuwaiti leaders took brotherly stances and showed
keenness on maintaining brotherly relations with the
Iraqi people,” Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani
told KUNA Tuesday.
The remarks came in comment over the leader’s recent
visit to Kuwait which he described as “very
successful and had aimed at boosting closer
relations.” The figure went on to say the Kurdistan
region of Iraq and Kuwait share many interests,
mainly the desire to see lasting stability and
democracy in Iraq which would hinder rise of another
dictatorship and autocracy that poses threat to
neighboring states. He said he had assured his hosts
he believes Iraq must heed international resolutions
and legitimacy on borders and all other issues. |

Barzani remarked Kuwaitis showed all due recognition
of Kurdistan and a realization the stable region is
very feasible as gateway for reconstruction of the
Iraqi state as a whole. “During my meeting with the
Kuwaiti Amir, His Highness saw it fit that I meet
with Chairman of Kuwait’s Chamber of Commerce, and,
so I did. And I believe that was an important step
to discuss Kuwaiti investment in Kurdistan.” The
President stated “We agreed on exchange of visits by
specialized delegations, as soon as possible, and I
would like to assure we in Kurdistan would offer all
possible to help along Kuwaiti investments,
particularly since we sensed a positive response and
interest on Kuwaiti investors’ part.”
Furthermore, the figure said “Kuwaitis could invest
in Kurdistan right now and in Iraq once the security
situation improves to help in reconstruction in
fields including tourism, agriculture, oil and gas,
and many other sectors. “We look forward to the best
of relations with Kuwait, and the Gulf states in
general, and I believe we laid the foundation for
such a relation between our two nations during our
visit,” the figure added. On the security situation
in Iraq, Barzani said “This issue came up in our
discussions with the Amir and Kuwaiti officials and
we sensed sympathy and willingness to lend a helping
hand wherever possible.”
The Kurdistan President also commented on his
meeting with Parliament Speaker Jasem Al-Khorafi. He
said “We have met Speaker Al-Khorafi and saw a
well-known and decent gentleman and extended an
invitation. He in turn extended an invitation for a
visit by a Kurdistan parliament delegation and such
a visit would be arranged soon, God willing.” On the
nature of relations between the two people, Barzani
said “The people of Kurdistan and Kuwait have sipped
from the same cup of suffering on the hands of the
former regime and so they understand best each
other’s sentiments.
“We have always held the Kuwaiti people dear as an
aware, enlightened, and democratic people that put
democracy in practice since the state won
independence. Kuwaitis have also proved their
mettle, regardless of all their diversity and
differences, during the Saddam aggression on their
homeland and stood as one behind their Amir, and
this is why and the means by which The Almighty
brought them victory and liberation.” He further
stressed “We shall remain the Kuwaiti people’s
allies and stand together in support of a federal
democratic Iraq where there is no room for
aggression or dictatorship, and we shall work on
healing the wounds left by the occupation. This is
our strategy.”
