Dr. Nuri Talabani, a Kurdistan
Regional Government’s Member of Parliament has criticized Kurdish
authorities for continuing to use laws enacted during the former
Iraqi regime Saddam Hussein’s tenure of ruling the country. He says
some of these laws are specifically being applied when trying
individuals from the press.
“We are not criticizing the courts, but the Kurdish authorities,”
said Talabani in a statement to The voices of Iraq.
“Even though a period of 14 years of self-rule has passed; they have
done very little to revise laws established by the former Iraqi
Ba'athists regime – a regime notorious of ruling by an iron arm,”
adding that local courts still follow these very same laws. |

These statements of Talabani follow a recent court trial that
sentenced two local journalists on charges of defamation to 6 months
imprisonment, with the implementation of the rule of the court
suspended.
The two journalists have been convicted as per Article 433 of the
Iraqi penal code for slander acts for a suit filed against them by
Aumer Fattah, Prime Minister of KRG’s Sulaimaniyah administration.
“I sympathize with the two journalists. They have been found guilty
according to laws of the Ba`ath regime,” said Talabani. He calls
upon Kurdish authorities to amend such old laws when taking new
measures.
