Kurdistan to announce position on Iranian shelling of province: official 2.5.2006

ERBIL, Kurdistan-Iraq, May 2, (KUNA) -- The government of Kurdistan will announce its position on the Iranian shelling of the province, as it constitutes a violation of Iraqi territories and not only the area, said Chairman of the Kurdish Leadership Court Dr. Fuad Hussein on Tuesday.

He noted in a press statement that the Iraqi Defense Ministry had declared its condemnation of the attacks.

A civilian Kurdish woman had been killed last night after Iranian tanks fired randomly at the area of Safh Qandeel on the Iraqi-Iranian borders.

Fields, houses, and cattle ha also been damaged in the attacks.

The shelling had come after confrontations between members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Iranian Army, which led to the firing of the tanks.

Iranian officials claim the attack came to force the PKK out of the area.

Meanwhile, reports said Iranian forces had penetrated Iraqi territories as far as two kilometers in the province of Erbil in search for PKK members, and residents of the area said the activities had led to a halting of trade activities between the two sides.
