Baghdad, Iraq
What might happen as the May 22 deadline approaches
for Iraqi Prime Minister-designate Nouri al-Maliki
to name a new Cabinet:
SUCCESS:
Under the constitution, al-Maliki will present the
names of his Cabinet members to the 275-member
parliament by May 22. Parliament, officially the
Council of Representatives, must then approve each
proposed minister by an absolute majority.
FAILURE:
The prime minister-designate reports to parliament
that he has failed to put together a Cabinet.
President Jalal Talabani then has 15 days to
designate another nominee, who will then have 30
days to form a Cabinet. The constitution does not
specifically rule out reappointing al-Maliki, in
effect giving him more time to complete the process.
