After the accession of Bulgaria and Romania, which
the red-green government signed last year, the
automatic further enlargement of the EU must be
stopped.
The problems of the two largest member countries,
France and Germany, with integrating a large number
of foreigners show very clearly: taking in
additional big countries, such as Turkey, would
completely overtax the EU. Even now Germany is
hardly able to cope with the integration of millions
of Turks living in the country, said Edmund Stoiber,
Bavarian Prime Minister and Christian Social Union (CSU)
leader.
How are Germany and other countries also with a
large proportion of Turks supposed to cope with
integrating Turkey in the EU? After all, in this
case, freedom of residence for all citizens will
sooner or later also apply to Turkey. In addition,
the current reports and pictures of the Kurdish
unrest in Turkey show that the country is still very
far away from being a peaceful area of law.
The CSU will come out clearly against full
membership of Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan's party
in the European People's Party (EPP). This [full
membership in the EPP] would be the wrong signal,
because it will be understood as an anticipated EU
membership. It holds true: yes to friendship with
Turkey. But no to full membership of the Turkish
government party AKP [Justice and Development Party]
in the EPP.
