A 7-member delegation
from the Belgian Senate visited pro-Kurdish
Democratic Society Party's (DTP) office in Istanbul
to obtain information about problems surrounding
cultural and political rights of Kurds and latest
developments in Amed (Diyarbakir) after street
battles between rioters and police.
In their first visit to Turkey, the delegation, led
by Senator Francois Roelants, met with Dogan Erbas,
senior leader in the party's Istanbul office.
Belgian Senator Roelants, speaking to IHA, explained
that the aim of the visit was to learn more about
political and cultural demands of Kurds and to
obtain information about the latest developments in
Diyarbakir after clashes erupted following the
funeral of 14 PKK militants killed in clashes with
Turkish security forces.
"We have got many questions and we have got many
interesting answers. That's very interesting for us
to know better in the perspective of Turkey's
integration to European Union," he said.
Roelants said that some peaceful solutions should be
found to ease the situation that seemed to be very
serious if the cycle of violence continues.
"We are in a country where we have different
languages and different cultures. Therefore, we are
very interested to know how people live in other
countries where there are different cultures and
languages and how education is organized in
different languages and how culture is protected. It
is extremely important question for us. We want to
address it seriously to Turkish government." he
added.
