UIA Wants Defence
Ministry, Leaves Interior for Kurds
(Asharq Al-Awsat)
Informed Iraqi sources revealed that the Shia United
Iraqi Alliance wants to run the defence ministry.
The sources said the alliance wants the Kurds to
control the interior ministry and Sunni Arabs to run
the foreign ministry. According to information al-Sharq
al-Awsat has obtained, the alliance is willing to
give the interior ministry to the Kurds because they
had many problems running the ministry. The
(secular) Iraqi National List met late into the
night (Wednesday) to decide whether to participate
in the government or not. A letter was passed to the
head of the list, Ayad Allawi, offering him a deputy
prime minister's post. Barham Saleh, a senior member
of the Kurdistan Alliance, was also offered the
deputy prime minister's post. (Sunni Arab
politicians have lobbied to control either the
defence or interior ministry, which they accuse of
targeting Sunni Arabs.)

Talabani: Presidential Council to Meet Next Week
(Al-Ittihad)
President Jalal Talabani maintained that the

in carrying out its agenda. In a press conference
attended by (vice-presidents) Adil Abdul Mahdi and
Tarik al-Hashimi, Talabani said the council would
not wait until the government and the National
Security Council are formed to start practicing its
duties. It plans to hold a meeting next week to
discuss security and to take action to stabilise
Baghdad. Talabani and his two aides showed full
support to the incoming prime minister (Jawad) al-Maliki
and to his forthcoming government.

(Al-Sabah)
United Nations envoy Ashraf Kadi announced an
initiative to eradicate violence and spread peace
and security in all provinces, including Baghdad.
After meeting with outgoing prime minister Ibrahim
al-Ja'fari, Kadi said in a press conference that the
initiative is part of an Iraqi-led national charter
that includes a peace treaty. He gave no additional
details but maintained that efforts were underway
among Iraqis, particularly Baghdad (leaders,) to
establish the treaty. Ja'fari praised the initiative
and called on political parties to support it.

Doctors Fleeing Mosul
(Al-Bayyna)
Dozens of doctors have fled Mosul after receiving
threatening letters. The letters were sent shortly
after three university professors were gunned down
and students demonstrated against the killings. The
head of the doctors' union in Mosul, Mohmood al-Haj
Kasim, said doctors were being targeted as part of a
larger campaign targeting scientific professionals
in Mosul. Mosul governor Duraid Kashmoola said a
terrorist network that kidnapped doctors for ransom
had been arrested. He said the head of the network
worked in hospital security. Nine doctors have been
killed and many others fled Mosul since the fall of
the former regime.
