Purple Shirt craze sweeps Sulaimaniyah city 21.4.2006

Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan-Iraq, April 21, - A craze for purple Chinese shirts is sweeping Iraqi Kurdistan province of Sulaymaniyah by storm as people hit the markets for summer clothes.

"If I can’t find a purple shirt I will leave the market and won’t buy anything," said Helcord Hemma Saleh, 26, a student.

Shop owners report brisk demand for Chinese-made purple shirts and say this has driven prices of other colors down.

"The market for summer clothes has been markedly active with a sharp interest in purple Chinese shirts," says Nasser Hassan Qader, 40, who owns a shop in central Sulaimaniyah.

"There are Chinese, Turkish and Syrian clothes in the market but people prefer Chinese because they offer good quality and good prices," he added.

Prices of Chinese shirts range from $10 to $25, Qader said.

Mohammed Rebwar, another shop owner on the same street who sells Turkish clothes, said he noticed that customers, mostly young people and students, chose light colors especially purple.

"Purple is my favorite color. I’m glad it is all over the market," said Tara Qurdaghi, 32, an employee.
"I noticed that young people like purple, so I bought a purple shirt," said 30-year-old student Osman Hemma Saeed.

But the obsession has had its toll on the business.

"After purple shirts run out, we have to sell other colors at lower prices," said shop owner Banar Mohammed, 25.
