Background
On January 23, 2006 an historic agreement was reached between the
Kurdistan Region’s most distinguished leaders, Jalal Talabani and
Masoud Barzani. Under this agreement, the two separate
administrations of the KRG are to merge upon the approval of the KNA
to form a unified Government.
The agreement declared that Mr. Nechirvan Barzani of the KDP would
serve as Prime Minister of the unified Government and that Mr. Omar
Fatah of the PUK would serve as Deputy Prime Minister. Prime
Minister Nechirvan Barzani and Deputy Prime Minister Omer Fatah were
unanimously confirmed by the KNA on March 26, 2006.
Accordingly, Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani has informed the KNA
Speaker that he is now ready to present the unified cabinet to the
KNA and people of the Kurdistan Region. The KNA will be asked to
approve the Government and its Ministers by a vote of confidence
next week. Upon approval, the Ministers will take the oath of office
at that time.
In making this historic announcement Prime Minister Barzani stated
that “The new, unified Cabinet is ready and eager to get to the work
of improving the lives of all the people of the Kurdistan Region. We
have great challenges ahead and I am confident that the Kurdistan
Region’s first unified Cabinet will make us all proud.”
